Bird
watching is more than just a hobby in one Meadville classroom.
Finding and identifying different species is now a hands on lesson that's earning the students national recognition. Fifth graders at Seton Catholic School have become experts when it comes to bird watching. For about the past 8 years, Seton students have been studying birds in the bird sanctuary built behind the school's playground. The kids maintain the habitat, make sure the birds have plenty of seeds and water. They also keep a daily log of the birds. The results are sent to Cornell University, where the data is analyzed. The students study the birds for a few months, then in groups, they complete science projects. One group of girls set out to see if sparrows visited the habitat more in cold or hot weather. The project was selected by Cornell to be published in a university magazine called, "Classroom Birdscope." The project took the students about 3 months and lots of hard work to complete.
